Ministry for Retirees
A new ministry opportunity for Adventist retirees was launched at the annual meeting of the Division Executive Committee on 24th November, 2005. Responding to suggestions and needs expressed by a number of retired workers, Pastor Laurie Evans, then Division President, asked the SPD Executive Committee to appoint a Coordinator for Retiree Ministries. The new role was designed to harness the experience and talents of many retirees who are willing to contribute to the ministry and mission of the church in the South Pacific Division.
Pastor Raymond Coombe, was appointed as Coordinator of this ministry. In addition to his current role as Director of Adventist Mission, Ray was asked to establish a database of names of retirees who are willing to serve the church in some way for specified periods of time in accordance with their gifts and experience.
From this database Pastor Coombe is able to inform conferences and Unions of the availability of persons willing to fill specific responsibilities or perform certain tasks as may be needed, and to act as the point of contact for enlisting such personnel for various responsibilities.
It is recognised that some retired workers serve the church on occasions through the Adventist Volunteer Service (directed by Pr Bob Bolst), however there are many other positions or tasks within the church (both locally and overseas) that require assistance from time to time. The church wishes to acknowledge and utilize the valuable experience and talents that are still available within the large number of retirees.
